I do not have much knowledge other than seeing some of these guitars with original stickers made in Sweden. I was trained and graduated from Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in 2001 and have had quite a bit of experience in repair since then as well. I did a level crown and polish to the fretboard and frets and plays really well now. Someone had tried putting steel strings but the pitch is still ok. Bridge is starting to pull so needs reglued. I am not sure about which species of tree the flamed back and sides came from it is similar to mahogany or cherry but with a unique hue.

They are not that easy to find, but I have come across som spare on ocasion, remains from people who did as You suggest, replace them with a traditional bone saddle, which probably improves the sound. Regarding the saddle screws, the thread is metric fine-thread, called M8-75, meaning 0.75 mm per rotation. So, To answer Your dating question, I doubt that it is made in 1974, rather 1971-1973. A few years later, Martin bought the Goya brand from Dude and started import of Japan made guitars, and later moved production to Korea and Taiwan. My own speculation is that Martin terminated the manufacturing of Goyas in Gothenburg.

These are my own speculations, mind You.Īnyway, in 1973 a new line of Levin flattops were introduced and I have never come across any of these Goya branded, and also the same year Martin overtook the Levin company, and started a small scale import of Levins to US. I am not shure when, but do beleive in 1972.ĭuring my inquiries among people with background in the Levin company, which includes the President throughout the sixties and seventies, no one recalls any deliveries to Dude, so these guitars may very well be re-labeled remains from the Kustom bankrupcy. After Kustom went bankrupt, the rights were taken over by Dude Inc.

The serial numbers were dropped and at the bottom of the label it said "Handmade in Sweden". Later, sometime 1970 or 71, Goya was sold to Kustom Electric, Chanute Kansas and the labels changed to an ornament picture (actually an anagram with HCL for Herman Carlson Levin) with the selling slogan "The Special Sound". The first Year it had "Goya Music, New York" on the label and was marked with serial number.
